High Dedication to OHS: PPA Honoured by the World Safety Organization Indonesia

As one of the leading players in Indonesia's mining industry, PT Putra Perkasa Abadi (PPA), with its slogan Safe & Strong Operational Performance, continues to embed an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) culture across every line of its operations. That consistent commitment to OHS principles has drawn recognition from a range of parties, both government and private institutions.

At the WSO Indonesia Safety Culture Awards (WISCA) 2025, held by the World Safety Organization (WSO) Indonesia at the Bidakara Hotel, Jakarta on Friday (2/5), PPA won two prestigious awards: Gold Level 4 – Safety Culture Programme Implementation and Top Emergency Response Team. The event forms part of the observance of World Day for Safety and Health at Work (28 April) and World Firefighters Day (4 May), aimed at fostering a sustainable OHS culture in the workplace.

The achievement is concrete proof of PPA's success in making OHS an inseparable part of the company's working culture. Safety is applied not merely as compliance but has become a core value in every business and operational process.

On the same occasion, PPA President Director Dr. Joko Triraharjo received the WSO Concerned CEO – Top Leadership award, an exclusive honour given to only seven selected CEOs in Indonesia judged to have shown outstanding dedication and contribution to the development of OHS in the country.

WISCA 2025 opened with a CEO Talks session featuring a number of key figures, among them Minister of Manpower Prof. Yassierli, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. as keynote speaker, Mirza Mahendra (Acting Director of Downstream Oil and Gas Business Development, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources), and PPA President Director Dr. Joko Triraharjo, who spoke in the session themed "Leadership: Strategies and Role Models in Building a Sustainable Safety Culture." The session also featured speeches by WSO International Chairman Jojo de La Rosa and WSO Indonesia Chairman Soehatman Ramli, and was attended by academics, selected drivers from the companies present, and student representatives from various universities.

In his speech, Prof. Yassierli highlighted Indonesia's still-high rate of workplace accidents. He stressed the importance of building strong working systems to create a better working culture on the way to Indonesia Emas 2045.

"Kita masih punya PR membangun sistem kerja kita sendiri yang itu berimpact pada budaya kerja. Saya punya quotes, if it can go wrong, it will, dan realitasnya tempat kerja kita seperti itu. Sehingga setiap perusahaan harus melakukan refleksi, untuk lebih resilient," said Yassierli.

Even so, Yassierli applauded the companies present for having implemented OHS at each of their work sites.

Soehatman Ramli, meanwhile, expressed his appreciation to the 114 companies taking part in the WISCA programme. He stressed that WISCA is not simply a competition but a form of collaboration to improve workplace safety culture on a sustained basis as technology advances.

"WISCA ini bukan lomba tapi kita bersama membangun budaya keselamatan… Meningkatkan K3 yang terus berkembang sesuai dengan kemajuan teknologi," said Soehatman Ramli in his opening speech.

As one of the speakers, Joko Triraharjo explained how PPA became the only company with an unlimited safety budget, because for PPA safety is an investment. He also underlined the importance of top management's role, the involvement of shareholders and partners in periodic evaluation, and granting share ownership to employees to build a sense of belonging to the company.

"Untuk mempercepat pencapaian keselamatan kerja di lapangan, dibutuhkan komitmen dari manajemen puncak dan pemegang saham, kebijakan zero injury, budaya kerja sehat, perlindungan lingkungan sekitar tambang, serta sistem yang terus berkembang," he explained.

He closed his session with a meaningful quote:

"Keselamatan adalah rasa syukur dan penghargaan terhadap kehidupan."

Participants also heard presentations on the same theme from several company directors representing a range of Indonesian industries: Didiek Hartantyo, President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero); Avep Disasmita, President Director of PT Pertamina Drilling Services Indonesia; and Esa Wisnu Prabowo, President Director of PT Prima Armada Raya.

WISCA is an inseparable part of documenting the improvement of OHS in Indonesia and of building motivation that grows out of recognising OHS implementation across the country's industrial sectors.
