PPA Wins 5 Awards at the Environmental & Social Innovation Awards 2024

PPA received 5 awards at the Environment & Social Innovation Awards (ENSIA) 2024, held in Nusa Dua, Bali on Wednesday (31/07).

Applying Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles in business practice, particularly in mining, is now a requirement, especially in meeting the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. It relates directly to sustainable and socially responsible mining.

ENSIA is an awards event recognising businesses and Local Heroes judged to have managed the environment and delivered social innovation well in pursuit of the SDGs.

This year ENSIA took the theme Extraordinary Turnaround Innovation for Sustainability, in line with Corporate Green Leadership 2024, held for the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's Company Performance Rating Assessment Programme in Environmental Management (PROPER).

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong, who also delivered a keynote speech on how businesses must commit to ESG implementation in their processes so as to align with the PROPER instrument — managing not only benefit but also environmental and social responsibility.

The award-winning programmes are as follows:

The PPA Site BA programme "Kompos BAHAGIA" makes use of organic food waste, processing it into compost to reduce the waste generated by mining activity. Its benefits are felt internally through the greening of work areas, and by the surrounding community and schools through the donation of fertiliser and related education. The programme aligns with SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities.

The AMM Site MHU programme "Reducing Filter Waste and Environmental Contamination from Oil Leaks on Excavators" aims to cut the hazardous waste generated by excavator repair and maintenance. The AMM Site MHU CSR team significantly reduced hydraulic oil top-ups by 4,483 litres during excavator repair and maintenance over the period August 2023 – March 2024. The measures applied include creating a standard follow-up form, replacing radiators every 6,000 hours, fitting additional filters, and drawing up hydraulic pressure standardisation guidelines. The programme aligns with SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 15, Life on Land.

The PPA Site BIB programme "Additional Fuel Filter For Reduce Low Power Issues And Extend Lifetime Fuel Filter HD785-7" is an innovation adding a diesel filter to improve the performance of the HD 785-7 unit. The PPA Site BIB CSR team was able to cut solid waste for one HD unit in a single 1000-hour periodic maintenance service from 16 filters replaced to 7 — a 56.3% reduction — after the additional diesel filter was fitted. The additional-filter innovation was successfully replicated internally by applying the extra filtration system across all HD 785-7 units operating at PPA's various jobsites. The programme aligns with SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy; SDG 9, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; and SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production.

The AMM Site MIFA programme "Converting Wooden Pallets into Sawdust" reuses wooden pallets (non-hazardous solid waste) as sawdust, at 3 to 4 sacks a month. The sawdust is used to handle spills of hazardous waste (used oil) on soil or on concrete areas.

The PPA Site SKS programme "Reducing Exhaust Emissions and Fuel Cost Consumption Efficiency Using a PLN Substation" is an innovation replacing generators with a PLN substation as an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient electricity supply. PPA Site SKS replaced generators GS 537 and GS 2402 with a PLN substation to supply electricity for all operational activity, helping cut the exhaust emission footprint by 90% and fuel consumption costs by up to 69%. The programme aligns with SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy.
